Given the many accolades that Alexandre had received, this is one of the most significant cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/issues\/animal-product-labeling\/what-is-humanewashing\/\">humanewashing<\/a> in the market today and suggests widespread problems throughout the dairy industry. At present, premium dairy producers have failed to provide a real alternative to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/issues\/climate-and-the-environment\/factory-farming-impact-animals-enivronment\/\">factory farming<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since Farm Forward exposed the horrific animal abuses of the \u201cCertified Humane\u201d mega-dairy Alexandre Family Farm in 2024, much has happened.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2025, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/news\/breaking-class-action-lawsuit\/\">consumer class-action lawsuit<\/a> was filed against Alexandre Family Farm in federal court.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The complaint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Alexandre-Certified-Humane-class-action.pdf\">states<\/a> that both Alexandre and Certified Humane falsely represented Alexandre products as \u201chumane,\u201d even while Alexandre engaged in shocking, widespread acts of animal cruelty.<\/li>\n<li>The lawsuit draws primarily on evidence uncovered by Farm Forward, but also on new photographs of abused Alexandre calves obtained by an independent investigator.<\/li>\n<li>The case is ongoing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times-standard.com\/2024\/10\/02\/crescent-city-based-farm-company-accused-of-animal-cruelty-sued-by-animal-rights-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">separate lawsuit<\/a> against Alexandre was filed in the Superior Court of California to enforce the state\u2019s animal cruelty <em>criminal<\/em> statutes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The suit indicts Alexandre for serious and pervasive animal abuse over several years.<\/li>\n<li>This case is also ongoing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Several retailers stopped marketing Alexandre products.<\/li>\n<li>Some grocers pulled Alexandre products from their shelves or canceled future orders.<\/li>\n<li>Certified Humane removed Alexandre from its \u201cList of Producers Who Are Certified Humane.\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>Astonishingly, Alexandre continued to claim to be \u201cCertified Humane.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>The Atlantic<\/em> published their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2024\/04\/alexandre-farms-treatment-of-animals\/677980\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigative report<\/a> on Alexandre\u2019s animal abuse and neglect, citing Farm Forward\u2019s report throughout.\n<ul>\n<li><em>The Atlantic<\/em> article corroborated many of Farm Forward\u2019s findings and contradicted none.<\/li>\n<li>The article became the top story on <em>The Atlantic<\/em>\u2019s website, bringing significant visibility to Alexandre\u2019s animal cruelty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more details, see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/news\/timeline-of-alexandre-dairy-investigation\/\">Timeline of Alexandre Dairy Investigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For context about the problems we uncovered at Alexandre, the failures of humane certifiers, and the perverse incentives of Organic dairy, read on.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Full story<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4959 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_0043-copyblur-1-scaled-e1710958268754-1024x927.jpg\" alt=\"A living cow being dragged by a skid loader across concrete.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"927\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_0043-copyblur-1-scaled-e1710958268754-1024x927.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_0043-copyblur-1-scaled-e1710958268754-300x272.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_0043-copyblur-1-scaled-e1710958268754-768x696.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_0043-copyblur-1-scaled-e1710958268754-1536x1391.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_0043-copyblur-1-scaled-e1710958268754.jpg 1898w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What:<\/strong> Alexandre dairy pursues a business model that ensures that cows routinely suffer egregiously and that diseased animals are sold into the human food supply chain. Most concerningly, animals with treatable diseases and injuries are systematically left to languish, leading to gory wounds and acute suffering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When:<\/strong> Abuse appears to have been occurring for years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why:<\/strong> Properly treating dairy cows&#8217; illnesses and injuries often requires the use of antibiotics, but if such treatment is given Alexandre can no longer sell the milk or meat at a premium price. Organic dairy thus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/news\/dairy-humanewashing-part-2-organic-certifications-incentivize-cruelty\/\"><em>incentivizes animal abuse<\/em><\/a>. Other problems appear to be the result of neglect, mistreatment, and mismanagement, perhaps stemming from financial pressures common in the dairy industry.<\/p>\n<h3>What is in Farm Forward\u2019s report?<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/publications\/dairy-deception-corruption-and-consumer-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> combines Farm Forward\u2019s own eyewitness accounts and accounts of multiple whistleblowers alongside extensive documentation\u2014including video footage, photographic evidence, ownership documents, a veterinary evaluation from a large animal veterinarian who works in the dairy industry, and a review by leading animal welfare scientist Gail Hanson, DVM. Given Alexandre\u2019s leading reputation in the industry, the report concludes that Alexandre\u2019s failures suggest that decades of industrialization make it nearly impossible for modern dairies to produce their products in line with public expectations for animal welfare.<\/p>\n<a class=\"arrowed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/news\/timeline-of-alexandre-dairy-investigation\/\" target=\"_self\">Read the timeline<\/a>\n<h3>What specific abuses were documented?<\/h3>\n<p>One thing should be made clear: what this investigation uncovered was not a handful of isolated incidents. Farm Forward reviewed more than a thousand videos and photos, conducted extensive interviews with whistleblowers, and witnessed first-hand conditions on Alexandre farms. What emerged is a massive pattern of systematic abuse, neglect, and mistreatment, driven from the top down. Documented incidences include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Regular incidences (all left untreated or treated inadequately) of\n<ul>\n<li>severe lameness and\/or foot rot,<\/li>\n<li>eye disease and cancer, and<\/li>\n<li>disease and\/or malnourishment leading to emaciation and poor body condition;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>A cow dragged by a skid loader more than 50 yards across concrete and gravel;<\/li>\n<li>The widespread use of calf hutches\u2014small shelters for baby cows that are widely viewed as inhumane<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4937 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Copy-of-IMG_1305-e1710796586774-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Copy-of-IMG_1305-e1710796586774-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Copy-of-IMG_1305-e1710796586774-766x1024.png 766w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Copy-of-IMG_1305-e1710796586774-768x1026.png 768w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Copy-of-IMG_1305-e1710796586774-1149x1536.png 1149w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Copy-of-IMG_1305-e1710796586774.png 1240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>\u2014separating and confining calves for months, leading to the early deaths of more than a dozen calves found on just one day;<\/li>\n<li>Sick and injured animals described by a consulting veterinarian as \u201cseverely lame\u201d being transported and sold to an auction house;<\/li>\n<li>Dozens of cows being trampled to death<\/li>\n<li>About 80 heifers experiencing trouble with calving killed with a .22 rifle;<\/li>\n<li>A cow\u2019s clogged teat cut off with a rusty knife with no pain management;<\/li>\n<li>A calf stuck in a stanchion left for three days nearly dying of dehydration;<\/li>\n<li>A nonambulatory disabled cow left lying out in the pasture for two weeks before she was shot;<\/li>\n<li>A cow so hungry that she fell into a feed trough and suffocated;<\/li>\n<li>An objectively severe case of spinal injury, incurred 6\u201312 months prior, resulting in the cow\u2019s tail paralysis, ataxia, and fecal and urinary incontinence;<\/li>\n<li>The cutting of horns through innervated tissue in hundreds of mature cows;<\/li>\n<li>A longstanding practice of transporting severely sick, injured, and lame cows to a sales auction instead of treating their illness or euthanizing them on-farm;<\/li>\n<li>Hundreds of instances of \u201ctreating\u201d cows\u2019 eye infections and cancers by pouring finely ground table salt on the cows\u2019 eyes, and then gluing on an improvised eye patch, often gluing cows\u2019 eyes shut in the process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What does this investigation tell us about dairy generally?<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/0130-169x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/0130-169x300.png 169w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/0130-576x1024.png 576w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/0130-768x1365.png 768w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/0130-864x1536.png 864w, https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/0130-1152x2048.png 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/>Not only are these violations of basic humane treatment, many are also violations of the certifications that Alexandre uses to market their products. In other words, certifications like Certified Humane and USDA Organic and claims like \u201cregenerative\u201d fail to ensure proper animal care in the dairy industry. Some of these standards even <strong>created perverse incentives that encouraged the operation to allow animals to languish and suffer with treatable diseases and injuries<\/strong>. We\u2019re calling on conscientious consumers to rethink their relationship with dairy.
