On Wednesday, May 15th the New York Times published <\/span>an opinion written by Farm Forward\u2019s Executive Director Andrew deCoriolis<\/span><\/a> in response to the Times\u2019 interactive article <\/span>Climate Change, Answered: How to shop, cook and eat in a warming world<\/span><\/a>. While the Times\u2019 article does a wonderful job of illustrating how animal products contribute to our warming world and encouraging readers to consider more sustainable options, it also recommends that readers replace beef and cheese\u2014the foods with the largest carbon footprints\u2014with pork and poultry.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA <\/span>2018 report<\/span><\/a> by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change gave the world just 12 years to reduce emissions and avert the worst impacts of climate change,\u201d wrote deCoriolis. \u201cThough chicken has a smaller carbon footprint than conventionally raised beef, \u2018switching from beef to chicken\u2019 (as your article suggests) is not a sustainable option.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Times deserves praise for its incisive and compelling article but\u2014even as we face threats as serious as the looming climate crisis\u2014when it comes to supporting the conventional pork and chicken industries in the wealthiest nations, the ends simply don\u2019t justify the means. In deCoriolis\u2019 words:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 70 percent of all antibiotics are fed to farmed animals, causing the growing epidemic of antibiotic resistance. Some of the most dangerous jobs in American are in chicken slaughterhouses. Rural communities near poultry farms have their air and water polluted by waste. And let\u2019s not forget the chickens themselves \u2014 99 percent of whom are raised in cramped, unsanitary conditions on factory farms.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One more bit of praise for the Times. The Times editor who ultimately accepted deCoriolis\u2019 letter initially rejected his use of the pronoun \u201cwhom\u201d when referring to chickens. The editor informed deCoriolis that the Times\u2019 style guide only permits the use of the pronoun \u201cwhich\u201d when referring to non-human animals. deCoriolis pushed back, and in a sign of the editor\u2019s thoughtful judgment and the public\u2019s changing views of non-human animals, the letter was published as intended.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\t
