Instead of improving conditions, the meat industry has invested in a series of confusing certifications in an attempt to alleviate consumers\u2019 fears while avoiding fundamental change\u2014even at trusted grocery stores like Whole Foods Market.<\/p>\n<p>Farm Forward began testing meat products purchased at Whole Foods for antibiotic residues following our resignation from the board of Global Animal Partnership (GAP), recognizable for its \u201cAnimal Welfare Certified\u2122\u201d label found on Whole Foods\u2019 shelves. Whole Foods touts itself as a leader in natural, sustainable, and healthy foods, but <strong>our testing revealed drug residue in its meat products marketed as \u201cantibiotic-free,\u201d Animal Welfare Certified\u2122, and USDA Organic<\/strong>\u2014including monensin sodium, a growth-promoting antibiotic prohibited by GAP and the Certified Organic program.<\/p>\n<p>Two days after we published our findings, the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/04\/07\/antibiotics-found-in-natural-meat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a><\/em> cast yet another blow to GAP\u2019s deception, confirming that the problem is systemic: a peer-reviewed study in Science covering more than 10 percent of America\u2019s \u201cantibiotic-free\u201d beef supply found that 15 percent of cows came from feedlots with at least one positive test for medically important antibiotics. <strong>Further, 22 percent of GAP\u2019s Animal Welfare Certified\u2122 animals came from feedlots that tested 100% positive for antibiotics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Farm Forward investigated Whole Foods\u2019 Animal Welfare Certified\u2122 meat because the retailer is perceived as the gold standard. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholefoodsmarket.com\/quality-standards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whole Foods proclaims<\/a> that it maintains \u201cStandards That Aren\u2019t Standard Anywhere Else\u201d and that \u201cbetter meat is our commitment to you,\u201d the vast majority of the animal products it sells are factory farmed. If we can\u2019t trust GAP and Whole Foods, what does that mean about the rest of the meat industry?<\/p>\n<p>Shoppers are fed up by the widespread use of antibiotics to prevent the inevitable spread of disease on factory farms. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/issues\/animal-product-labeling\/survey-confusion-welfare-labels\/\">major consumer survey<\/a> conducted by Farm Forward found that 46 percent of Americans believe that animals certified by GAP should never be fed antibiotics\u2014yet our findings prove that GAP can\u2019t deliver on its promises.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, the meat industry, aided by companies like Whole Foods, has used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/issues\/animal-product-labeling\/what-is-humanewashing\/\">humanewashing tactics<\/a> to trick consumers into paying premiums for factory-farmed meat. Farm Forward is calling for an end to Whole Foods\u2019 humanewashing: if it\u2019s factory farmed, label it factory farmed.
