{"id":1592,"date":"2021-07-13T07:48:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-13T07:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/farmforward1.wpengine.com\/?p=1592"},"modified":"2022-11-22T02:30:49","modified_gmt":"2022-11-22T02:30:49","slug":"farm-forward-wins-right-to-further-pursue-downed-pig-lawsuit-against-usda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/news\/farm-forward-wins-right-to-further-pursue-downed-pig-lawsuit-against-usda\/","title":{"rendered":"Farm Forward Wins Right to Further Pursue Downed Pig Lawsuit Against USDA\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\t<section class=\"normal_content bg-white padding-top-small padding-bottom-large\" style=\"\">\n\t\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"row center-md\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-md-7\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"content-styled\"><p>In a victory for Farm Forward and its allies, on June 28, 2021 the U.S. District Court\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/law.lclark.edu\/live\/files\/32084-dkt-50order-denying-mtdpdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled<\/a>\u00a0that Farm Forward and a coalition of animal and environmental protection organizations have standing to sue in two lawsuits against the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), regarding regulations at pig slaughterhouses.<\/p>\n<p>In a suit filed in December 2019, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/law.lclark.edu\/centers\/animal_law_studies\/animal_law_clinics\/animal-law-litigation-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Animal Law Litigation Clinic<\/a>\u00a0challenged USDA\u2019s reducing oversight at pig slaughterhouses and eliminating limits on slaughter speeds, each of which expose pigs to greater suffering.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/downed-pigs-are-turned-into-pork-products-a-new-lawsuit-seeks-to-stop-that\/2020\/02\/06\/3f8302ea-46c8-11ea-bc78-8a18f7afcee7_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The second lawsuit<\/a>, filed in February 2020 by Farm Forward and other plaintiffs, sued Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and the USDA for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmforward.com\/news\/usda-publishes-egregious-final-hog-slaughter-inspection-rule\/\">failing to protect pigs who are too sick or injured to walk at slaughterhouses<\/a>, posing serious risks to animals and food safety.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, well over half a million pigs arrive at U.S. slaughterhouses too sick or injured to stand or walk. These \u201cdowned\u201d pigs have a higher risk of carrying a host of human-transmissible pathogens, including Listeria, Campylobacter, Salmonella, swine flu, and Yersinia. Downed pigs are also more likely to face inhumane handling, including excessive electro-shocking, prodding, kicking, shoving, and dragging by workers attempting to force them to move.<\/p>\n<p>These won\u2019t be easy lawsuits to win, but we will continue to fight for a more just food system until no animals suffer on factory farms.
